Steps
Mow Your Lawn:
Trim the grass and clear the clippings. Ensure the blades are not set to cut the grass shorter than 1 ¾ inches.
Aerate if Necessary:
If thatch buildup is over 1/2 inch, aerate the lawn to remove soil plugs approximately 3/4 inch wide and 2 1/2 – 3 inches long. This opens up the ground, allowing oxygen, water, and nutrients to reach the roots. Consider hiring a professional or renting a core aerator if you prefer DIY.
Apply Fertilizer:
Distribute the starter fertilizer across your lawn. Refer to our fertilization guide for specific instructions.
Apply Topdressing Soil:
Evenly spread the garden soil blend over your lawn to a depth of about 1/4 – 1/3 inch. Use the back of a garden rake to work the topdressing down to the soil level.
Overseed:
Spread grass seed evenly using a suitable seed spreader, based on the size of your lawn.
Optional Rolling:
To improve seed-soil contact and deter birds, lightly roll the seeded area with a lawn roller.
Watering:
If dry weather is expected, water the area gently.
